Hah! In the words of the great Eric Hobsbawm (and he is great!) "Amundsen of Norway reached the South Pole in 1911, one month ahead of the hapless British Captain Scott. (Neither achievement had or was intended to have the slightest practical consequence.)" I read that yesterday and thought it was hilarious! Poor, poor Scott, I am sure he'd be devastated to be called wretched, pathetic and inconsequential, even by a bolshie lefty pinko like Hobsbawm!

This is why it all went so horribly wrong. Scott was too busy larking about with heroic poses.

Oates: "I am just going outside and may be some time"
Scott: "Oates, get back here - I haven't finished this pose yet!"
