Scary Go Round site problems

IMPORTANT POST (tell your friends)

Are you having problems getting on the Scary Go Round site? Specifically, does the page get stuck on the advert at the top and then go no further. If this is the case, please post in the comments with which browser you're using, and whether you're on a Mac or PC. If you don't have a blogger account, please email me (john@scarygoround.com) with the subject line "site problems".

If you haven't been able to read the comic, I have a 1994-style page here (compatible with Netscape 2) so you can catch up.

Working fine for me on a Mac using Safari and Firefox.

As a web developer, I tried a few different browsers to help you out, but nothing conclusive popped up.

Firefox 3 on Linux and Windows works fine - with Adblock Plus enabled, I just get the page, with it disabled, there's a lovely american apparel ad at the top.

Internet Explorer (6-ish) on Windows also loads fine, but gives a "Done, but with errors on page" in the status bar. The Page displays with the right sidebar below all the rest of the content. Still on the right, but the top of the sidebar is below your news posts.

All browsers look like maybe some background color tag isn't working right, but that could be a design decision. For example, letters like A, R, and O in the title have black in the center, but all the rest are the same tan color as the sidebar.

It looks a little like an unfinished MS paint project, where someone started with the "fill" tool, but only got around to clicking half the spots. I'll email a screenshot if that's not what you were intending - let me know.

Shawn that is a "design decision" and I will let my hurt feelings slide as you have tried so hard in all other regards.

The advert problem is an intermittent fault that I can't get to the bottom of. Maybe my site is built on an old indian burial ground - we just don't know.

It works for me but it seems to be taking an unusually long time to load. Checked using Chrome, IE7, Firefox 3, and Safari all on Windows XP.

One thing I did notice. On IE, the shirt ad image under "More Stories" only loaded a sliver about 2 pixels high. It's not the top or the bottom, it's somewhere in the middle.

I actually couldn't access your website for several months (using Firefox on a PC) until switched to Google Chrome (uh...whenever it was first released, can't remember when), and haven't had any problems since.

Also, I swear the "captcha" is getting dirtier - my word is "wanct". Say that out loud in front of your mum and watch how fast you get slapped.

I too have the merchandise advert problem that Dustin mentioned in IE7 and also the RSS button next the the date doesn't appear in that browser. Things are working fine in other browsers though.

Anyone having this problem should try updating Java - via Apple update on a Mac, and via Control Panel/Java/Updates on a PC.

This will more than likely fix it, regardless of browser.

Mark, is this true? I keep Java up to date which might explain why I can't recreate the problem on any of the browsers people say they see it on.

Sounds promising. I've encountered it with a few friends' computers recently. They complained that their gmail / hotmail / yahoomail pages were only half-loading. Sure enough, a Java update fixed it.

I interrupt the comments on how the site is working to express my love for Thursday's SGR. Yay Milford! Mars bars and male bonding will cure everything.

Firefox 3.0.3, Mac OS X 10.5.5. Sometimes (not always) the page does not load properly: the screen is blank and the 'loading' indicator doesn't stop. Switching to the URL bar and hitting return to load again reliably brings up the page.

Not working using Google Chrome via Windows XP. Neither does http://drmcninja.com. Sam problem, getting locked up on the banner. It has got to do with the banner ads I think.
